Mireuksaji pagoda in Iksan
Mireuksa Temple Site is a temple site during the Baekje period in Giyang-ri, Iksan. According to the Samguk Yusa, Mireuk Samjon appeared in the pond under Yonghwasan Mountain during the reign of King Mu of Baekje, and at the request of the queen, the pond was filled and towers, gold halls, and corridors were built in three places. Records show that Mireuksa Temple was built during the Baekje period and was closed during the Joseon Dynasty. In the arrangement of the temple, there are stone pagodas in the east and west, wooden pagodas in the middle, and behind the pagoda, there is a gold hall dedicated to the Buddha. It is divided into corridors and has a very unique Garam layout. The size of the Geumdang is 5 bays in front space and 4 bays in side space, and there is an empty space on the floor, which seems to be in preparation for moisture on the floor. Ondol facilities were found on the site of buildings during the Goryeo and Joseon periods, making it an important data for studying the development process of ondol. Excavated relics include tiles, earthenware, metal, and wood, and many roof tiles with letters engraved were also found. The stone pagoda in front of Geumdang in the west was designated as National Treasure No. 11, and it is the oldest stone pagoda remaining and was made using wooden construction techniques. Repair and maintenance was finally completed in 2019 after reinforcing the collapsed back of the collapse with cement. Currently, a restored model of Mireuksa Temple is on display at the Iksan National Museum. Mireuksa Temple was built to prevent Silla’s invasion with the power of Buddhism, and is a place of great historical value considered to have played an important role until the fall of Baekje.

Iksan National Museum
It is a national museum under the National Museum of Korea located in 362 Mireuksa-ji-ro (Geumma-myeon), Iksan-si, Jeollabuk-do. It is a museum that displays relics excavated from Iksan and Gunsan areas, including Mireuksa Temple Site, and mainly exhibits relics from the Baekje period.
Mireuksa Temple, founded in the 7th century during the Baekje period, flourished as a huge Buddhist temple even during the Unified Silla period and existed as an important Buddhist temple even during the Goryeo Dynasty. Mireuksa Temple, which maintained its reputation despite the Joseon Dynasty’s policy of suppressing Buddhism, continued its Buddhist lantern until the 17th century after the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592. At the Iksan National Museum, you can see the founding, prosperity, and revival of Mireuksa Temple. In addition, major relics such as Geumdong-ro and Sarijangmangu are displayed.
